Bemgba Akaayar has finally undergone successful surgery at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi with the giant lump on his back completely removed, restoring him to normalcy.
The peasant farmer, a native of Tombo in Buruku LGA of Benue State, had lived w.ith the giant lump which mysteriously grew on his back for over ten years and his plight was brought to public attention through this medium recently triggering an outpouring of word-wide public sympathy and financial support to foot his medical bills.
Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon and Consultant, Professor Bito, who led a team of resident doctors headed by Dr. Abutu, Friday at the BSUTH performed the ground-breaking surgery which was scheduled to last for 9 hours but was eventually successfully concluded in 4 hours, with the patient regaining full consciousness by 12:00 noon.
Mr. Akaayar has since been in stable condition and is responding well to post-surgery care as well as feeding normally.
It will be recalled that surgery on the patient had been previously rescheduled severally on reason of his sugar level rising above required levels, and it was therefore, a thing of immense relief and joy for his family members, friends and his world-wide family of well-wishers that the operation has eventually been successfully carried out.
