There are growing indications that northern hegemonists have lined up a number of strategies to retain political power at the centre in the event that ill health forces President Muhammadu Buhari to quit office.
A source in Kaduna who confided in jamesibechi.com, says a group of northern intelligentsia and some powerful Emirs and Islamic leaders secretly met in in the state last week and resolved that while the constitution mandates his Deputy, Vice President, and now Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, to assume office as President if the President resigns or dies (God forbid bad thing), the region will apply a number of measures to ensure that Osinbajo does not stay in office beyond 2019, should Buhari’s illness cuts his presidency short.
They also resolved to insist that no other region but the North – not just North but Core North – can stake a claim to the presidency in 2019, so as to compensate for late President Yar’Adua and Buhari’s unfinished tenures(in the event that Buhari resigns).
In the light of the above, the hegemonists who were at the Kaduna secrete meeting are demanding for 13-year presidency for the Core North (to compensate for Buhari’s abridged two terms of eight years should he resign on health ground and five years to make up for Yar’Adua’s unfinished first and second terms in office).
To actualize this plan, the northern group is proposing the region massively pull out of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and by extension severe its alliance with the Southwest should Osinbajo shows interest in contesting the presidency in 2019.
In the place of the Southwest, a political alliance between either the Southeast or South South or a mega alliance with the two zones in one fell swoop is being proposed to win the presidency in 2019 under a new political platform.
