Governor Samuel Ortom, Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly among others were yesterday conferred with various merit awards by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Radio Benue Chapel.
Governor Ortom, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Terver Akase, received ‘Gold Shield Award’ in recognition of his tremendous efforts towards peace and security for lives and property in the State.
Speaking at the event tagged ‘Night of Thanksgiving and Awards’, held at the premises of Radio Benue Makurdi, Governor Ortom reassured people of the state of enhanced security and good governance, stressing that his covenant with the people would be kept.
While commending the management and staff of the station for their quality reportage of government programmes and policies, Governor Ortom said he remains supportive of the station towards ensuring wider coverage.
He stated that rehabilitation work on Radio Benue substation Idekpa had been completed and would soon resume operations, while work would soon commence on Radio Benue substation Katsina-Ala with a view to ensuring that Benue people get timely and truthful information.
Also speaking, Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, thanked the organizers of the event and promised to collaborate with the State Executive Council to provide the needs of the station.
On his part, the Guest Speaker, Mr. Terzungwe Uwua of Radio Nigeria, who spoke on the topic: ‘Rebranding Radio Benue, A Limping Ostrich that Lays the Golden Egg’ called for the station’s repositioning through the provision of transmitters and other equipment to improve the quality and coverage of transmission.
He advised journalists within and outside the state to adhere to professional ethics and promote the good programmes and policies of the present administration instead of portraying the State in negative light.
Earlier, Director General, Radio Benue, Mrs. Espei Ushe-Uba, thanked Governor Ortom for the numerous ways he has been assisting the station and for the swift intervention during the flood disaster.
Those who received various awards at the event included the State Head of Service, Engineer George Ede, Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. James Anbua, member representing Tarka State Constituency in the State Assembly, Hon. Bem Mngutyo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Titus Zam, Chairman, Buruku Local Government Area, Mrs Justina Sorkaa, and Mr. Teghtegh Dakor of Radio Benue.
Others were the Principal, St. Michael’s Secondary School Aliade, Very Rev. Fr. Ternungwa Tor, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Disabilities, Dr Samuel Ankeli as well as the Chairman Ukum Local Government Council, Hon. Tor-Tyokaa Ibel-logo.
